What will happen to TPU hot melt adhesive film when it gets wet?

TPU hot melt adhesive film is a high-performance, environmentally friendly material that is widely used in various fields, such as the shoe industry, clothing industry, automobile manufacturing industry, etc. However, if the TPU hot melt adhesive film gets wet, it may have adverse effects on its performance and use. This article will introduce in detail the possible situations and causes of TPU hot melt adhesive film when it becomes damp, and discuss how to avoid and solve this problem.

    1. The effects of moisture on TPU hot melt adhesive film

    1. Decreased bonding performance

The bonding performance of TPU hot melt adhesive film is one of its most important properties. If the TPU hot melt adhesive film gets wet, its bonding performance will decrease, which will be manifested as a decrease in bonding strength and a weak bonding surface. This will adversely affect the performance of products and materials using TPU hot melt adhesive film

    2. Decreased temperature resistance

The temperature resistance of TPU hot melt adhesive film is also one of its important properties. If the TPU hot melt adhesive film gets wet, its temperature resistance will decrease, which will be manifested as easy deformation and blistering at high temperatures. This will adversely affect the durability and stability of products and materials using TPU hot melt adhesive film.

    3. Appearance changes

The TPU hot melt adhesive film may become moldy or blistered on the surface after being affected by moisture, affecting its appearance and use.

    2. Reasons why TPU hot melt adhesive film gets damp

    1. Raw material issues

If the raw material quality of the TPU hot melt adhesive filmm is poor, or its formula is unreasonable, its moisture resistance will be reduced and it will be susceptible to moisture.

    2. Production process issues

If the production process is not properly controlled during the production process, such as the heating temperature is too high, the cooling speed is too slow, etc., the structure of the TPU hot melt adhesive film will be unstable and prone to moisture.

    3. Storage and usage environment issues

If the ambient humidity is too high during storage and use, or if it is not used as required during use, the TPU hot melt adhesive film will become damp.

TPU hot melt adhesive film vs anaerobic adhesive: "Scene flexibility" difference in automotive interior bonding
2025-09-11
From the perspective of curing conditions, TPU hot melt adhesive film does not need to rely on special environments, while anaerobic adhesives are severely restricted by "auerobicity". The curing principle of anaerobic glue is to undergo polymerization under conditions of lack of oxygen and catalyzed by metal ions (such as iron and copper). If it is in an environment where air circulation or metal substrates are not available, the curing speed will be greatly slowed down or even unable to cure. In automotive interiors, most bonding scenarios are "open" (such as bonding the door panel skin to PP substrate, and the ceiling fabric to the sponge), the air can freely contact the bonding surface, and the substrate is mostly non-metallic (PP, ABS, fabric, etc.), lacking metal ion catalysis, and additional catalyst is required when using anaerobic glue, and the curing time is as long as several hours, which is difficult to meet the needs of industrial production. The TPU hot melt adhesive film only needs to be melted by heating (120-160℃) and can be cured after pressurization and cooling. It does not need to rely on the ambient oxygen concentration or the base material. It can be cured stably in open or closed bonding scenarios, and the curing time only takes a few dozen seconds to a few minutes, adapting to the fast-paced needs of the interior production line.
