Processing properties of TPU film

    The processing performance of TPU film has been a hot topic in the field of material science and industrial production. As a thermoplastic elastomer, TPU film combines the excellent properties of plastic and rubber, such as good elasticity, abrasion resistance, aging resistance, oil resistance, water resistance, chemical resistance and other characteristics. These characteristics make TPU films have a wide range of applications in packaging, automotive, medical, shoe materials, wire and cable and other fields. In this paper, we will focus on the processing performance of TPU film, including its processing methods, processing conditions, possible problems in the processing and solutions.

    First, the processing method of TPU film

    TPU film processing methods mainly include extrusion, casting, calendering, blow molding and injection molding. Among them, extrusion and casting are the most commonly used processing methods. Extrusion is the TPU pellets through the extruder heated and melted, through the mold extrusion into film. The casting method is to cast the molten TPU into film through a casting machine. Both methods can produce high-quality TPU film, but the specific choice of which method depends on the production scale, product thickness, production efficiency and cost and other factors.

    Second, the processing conditions of TPU film

    TPU film processing conditions include temperature, pressure, speed and so on. Among them, the temperature is the key factor affecting the processing performance of TPU film, the processing temperature of TPU is usually between 180-240 ℃, the specific temperature depends on the type of TPU and the size of the granule. If the temperature is too high, it will lead to the decomposition of TPU, affecting the quality and performance of the film; if the temperature is too low, it will lead to the TPU can not be fully melted, making the film surface rough, bubbles and other problems. In addition, pressure and speed are also important factors affecting the processing performance of TPU film, which need to be adjusted according to the specific production equipment and process.

​From the perspective of curing conditions, TPU hot melt adhesive film does not need to rely on special environments, while anaerobic adhesives are severely restricted by "auerobicity". The curing principle of anaerobic glue is to undergo polymerization under conditions of lack of oxygen and catalyzed by metal ions (such as iron and copper). If it is in an environment where air circulation or metal substrates are not available, the curing speed will be greatly slowed down or even unable to cure. In automotive interiors, most bonding scenarios are "open" (such as bonding the door panel skin to PP substrate, and the ceiling fabric to the sponge), the air can freely contact the bonding surface, and the substrate is mostly non-metallic (PP, ABS, fabric, etc.), lacking metal ion catalysis, and additional catalyst is required when using anaerobic glue, and the curing time is as long as several hours, which is difficult to meet the needs of industrial production. The TPU hot melt adhesive film only needs to be melted by heating (120-160℃) and can be cured after pressurization and cooling. It does not need to rely on the ambient oxygen concentration or the base material. It can be cured stably in open or closed bonding scenarios, and the curing time only takes a few dozen seconds to a few minutes, adapting to the fast-paced needs of the interior production line.
