Comprehensive comparison of the environmental performance of TPU hot melt adhesive film and traditional adhesives

In the production of automotive interiors, the environmental performance of adhesives directly affects cabin air quality, regulatory compliance and brand reputation. The environmental differences between TPU hot melt adhesive films and traditional solvent-based adhesives, anaerobic adhesives, etc. have become a core consideration for interior factory owners when selecting products.

In terms of compliance with regulations, TPU hot melt adhesive film shows absolute advantages. Because traditional solvent glues contain volatile components such as benzene and toluene, the amount of VOCs released is often close to the GB/T 27630-2023 limit, and some of them cannot even pass the SVHC list screening of the EU REACH regulations. The TPU hot melt adhesive film has no solvent added throughout the process, and the formaldehyde emission can be controlled below 0.02 mg/m³, which is far lower than the standard limit. At the same time, it can easily pass international certifications such as ELV directives and SGS tests, and adapt to the full-scale compliance requirements of OEMs from national standards to international standards.

Odor control is a key differentiator between the two. Due to solvent residues, traditional adhesives will continue to release pungent odors after curing, becoming the main source of complaints about odors in the car. They are difficult to meet the high-level requirements of the VDA 270 odor evaluation standard. The TPU hot-melt adhesive film itself is an odorless solid substrate. No odor is evaporated during the heating, melting and curing processes. It is especially suitable for closed cockpit scenarios of new energy vehicles and fundamentally solves the pain point of odor affecting the driving experience.

In terms of hazardous substance control, traditional adhesives are prone to problems such as excessive heavy metals and plasticizer migration, which bring compliance risks to the supply chain. The TPU hot melt adhesive film is made of environmentally friendly resin base material and does not contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. It fully complies with the restrictions on hazardous substances in the ELV directive and can provide full traceability of ICP-OES test reports. In addition, it forms a stable solid adhesive layer after curing, without the risk of component migration, and avoids the problem of interior contamination caused by migration of traditional adhesives.

In terms of subsequent environmental protection treatment, traditional solvent adhesives need to be equipped with exhaust gas treatment equipment to increase environmental protection investment; while the production and construction of TPU hot melt adhesive films have no waste gas emissions, and waste adhesive films can be recycled and reused, which is in line with the development trend of "low-carbon production" in the automotive industry. Taken together, TPU hot melt adhesive film is not only a "safety card" for environmental protection compliance, but also a "bonus item" for improving interior quality.

TPU hot melt adhesive film vs anaerobic adhesive: "Scene flexibility" difference in automotive interior bonding
2025-09-11
From the perspective of curing conditions, TPU hot melt adhesive film does not need to rely on special environments, while anaerobic adhesives are severely restricted by "auerobicity". The curing principle of anaerobic glue is to undergo polymerization under conditions of lack of oxygen and catalyzed by metal ions (such as iron and copper). If it is in an environment where air circulation or metal substrates are not available, the curing speed will be greatly slowed down or even unable to cure. In automotive interiors, most bonding scenarios are "open" (such as bonding the door panel skin to PP substrate, and the ceiling fabric to the sponge), the air can freely contact the bonding surface, and the substrate is mostly non-metallic (PP, ABS, fabric, etc.), lacking metal ion catalysis, and additional catalyst is required when using anaerobic glue, and the curing time is as long as several hours, which is difficult to meet the needs of industrial production. The TPU hot melt adhesive film only needs to be melted by heating (120-160℃) and can be cured after pressurization and cooling. It does not need to rely on the ambient oxygen concentration or the base material. It can be cured stably in open or closed bonding scenarios, and the curing time only takes a few dozen seconds to a few minutes, adapting to the fast-paced needs of the interior production line.
